Hello there!
As a beginner artist or someone interested in learning how to get started, have you wondered where to begin? Today, I'll be sharing how I chose drawing as my focused medium of art, and how you can simply discover where to start too.
Why I chose pencil to start my art journey
I am a self-taught artist and I love creating with pencil. When I first began diving into the world of art, there were many art forms to choose from to get started. As most beginners do I started with pencil and kept going!
Drawing is foundational to learning and creating beautiful and professional bodies of artwork. Although instead of branching off to explore other forms as I continued to develop my skill, I stuck with drawing. For me it spoke to the little curious child within me.
As I researched and learned about different forms of art the majority of the pieces that struck me as the most fascinating was drawn by either graphite and/or color pencil. Even more specifically realistic drawings.
It also more deeply connected me to my faith reminding me that any mistaken can be erased, and you could try again. Drawing gave me the room to make an error and not feel so bad about it. With my kneaded eraser I could clear it away and try again.
3 Easy Tips for Beginners to Find Their Form of Art to Start With:
1. Start with what feels natural
I started drawing because it felt natural to do it, and it wasn’t anything that I had to force myself to do. When you start with the art form that feels natural you’ll appreciate it and enjoy doing it more than something that is forced.
2. Look at different bodies of art
Look at different types of art. Which ones do you gravitate to the most? Painting? Maybe gouache, watercolor, acrylic, oil, or abstract? Or maybe you like drawing, but you would like to try anime, line drawings, pointillism, realism, or even fashion!
There are all kinds of amazing mediums and styles of art to choose from. Choose the form that catches your eye the most, and begin by learning the basics of how to recreate it.
3. Start small
Start small by picking up a piece of paper and a regular #2 HB pencil that you used in grade school. Now just start drawing! See how you feel afterwards.
Or if you don’t want to break the bank buying a professional paint set from the art store, go to Dollar Tree. Pick up a cheap paint set and canvas (my kids and I do this all the time), go home and paint. See which one feels good, and GROW from there.
Keep in mind this is just a start. Any first step you take is never wrong. Taking the first step is always the best step to take.
Its Okay to Explore Other Mediums
As a beginner artist developing your skills you don’t have to stick to one medium for your entire artistic journey. You can explore and try different forms of art. Its always wonderful to become masterful in one form, but its great to try others to incorporate in your own body of art as well.
I too plan to dive into different styles to include in my work, as I will not always only do pencil realism. My long term goal is to continue to evolve as an artist by trying new mediums such as watercolor or even line art. But more to come on that in the future.
There is not one song to sing in the world of art. There are many different melodies to play. Choose the one that best fits you and sing away. 😊
